For pfSense we can’t install the VMware Tools as usual in vSphere and the link below will not work.

Fortunately there is an open source implementation of VMware Tools for pfSense by the open-vm-tools project, which will provide with open-vm-tools a set of services and modules, that enable several features in VMware products for better management and seamless user interactions with guests.

It includes kernel modules for enhancing the performance of virtual machines running Linux or other VMware supported Unix like guest operating systems.

Below you can see my pfSense virtual machine named Border-GW (pfSense) which is running in my vSphere lab environment.

VMware Tools is not installed on this virtual machine.

We can install the open-vm-tools on pfsense by using the package manager. On the pfSense web gui navigate to:

System -> Package Manager

Click on Available Packages

Search for open-vm and click on Install for the Open-VM-Tools package.

VMware Tools is a suite of utilities that enhances the performance of the virtual machine’s guest operating system and improves management of the virtual machine.

Confirm the installation of the package.

pfSense-pkg-Open-VM-Tools installation successfully completed.

We can now see the Open-VM-Tools package under InstalledPackages.

The previous notification about VMware Tools is not installed on this virtual machine will immediately gone after installing the Open-VM-Tools package on pfSense.
